Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra

Passion, Discipline, Dedication – these virtues are not only at home in Dortmund’s football stadium, but also in the Dortmund Philharmonic. Since its foundation in 1887 the city’s orchestra has consistently been at the forefront among Germany’s concert and opera orchestras. The Philharmonic Concerts are just as dazzling as the performances in the Opera House, and are the reason that the Dortmund Philharmonic is consistently counted among Germany’s finest orchestras. The renowned orchestra has been directed by its General Music Director, Gabriel Feltz, since the 2013/14 season. Being able to look back on a 125 year history, the Dortmund Philharmonic sees itself as an orchestra for the population of the city and the surrounding region. Its goal is to be at the centre of the city’s musical life, thus having a profound influence. Along with the long-established concert series – Philharmonic Concerts, Viennese Classic Concerts, Chamber Concerts – the Philharmonic also offers a varied musical experience with its “Classic Expeditions”.

Its charismatic chief conductors such as Wilhelm Schüchter, Marek Janowski or Hans Wallat all had a positive, lasting impact on the orchestra. Remarkable events of that period include great Wagner and Strauss cycles. Currently, the Dortmund Philharmonic and Gabriel Feltz are celebrating considerable success with their interpretation of the works of Rachmaninoff – both in the architecturally and acoustically wonderful Konzerthaus Dortmund and with their CD recordings.
Guest performances have taken the orchestra to Milan, the Cologne Philharmonic Hall, Den Haag, the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels, the Stephaniensaal in Graz, the Festspielhaus Salzburg and the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, among many others. In the 2018/19 season, the orchestra will play in Toblach (Italy) at the opening concert of the Gustav Mahler Festival under the baton
of Gabriel Feltz.
