On Friday, April 19, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing with the young cello star Santiago Cañón-Valencia, under the baton of maestro Lio Kuokman at the Kolarac Hall. The Belgrade orchestra will showcase a repertoire featuring music from Oscar-winning composers – Bernstein, Williams, and Korngold.

These three American composers have made their name in the film genre as well as in classical music, with John Williams being one of the most prominent film music composers in history. He has composed over a hundred film scores, five of which have won him the Oscars. On Friday evening, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra will, together with the Colombian cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia, present the classical work of this composer with the only concerto for this instrument, where the cello takes on the role of the hero. Valencia holds the title of BBC New Generation Artist 2022, praised by critics as one of the most promising young cellists (Forbes Colombia). A multi-talented musician, he is active as a soloist, composer, painter, and photographer. This will be his premiere performance with the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Oscar-winning program begins with Bernstein’s score for the film On the Waterfront, starring Marlon Brando, which won staggering eight Oscars, and concludes with Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Symphony in F-sharp, which won him an Oscar for original music for the film The Adventures of Robin Hood.
