Alexandra Yangel

Alexandra Yangel is a 28-year-old Russian-born lyric mezzo soprano. After two years as an ensemble member of the Vienna State Opera, she made her Italian debut in 2019 in the role of Waltraute (Die Walküre) at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari and sang her first Nicklausse (Les contes d’Hoffmann) for Operklosterneuburg.

 

In the 2021-2022 season, she will make debuts at the Berlin Staatsoper, the Grand Théâtre de Genève and the Hungarian State Opera. Alexandra is also due to appear in a future production at the Bavarian State Opera. Her forthcoming concert engagements include performances in Moscow, Hamburg, Belgrade and Dortmund. She has previously appeared in Die Zauberflöte at the Verbier Festival in 2019 and made her German stage debut, appearing as Charlotte (Werther) at Theater Aachen in the same year

 

Before embarking on her vocal career, Alexandra was an accomplished violinist. Born in Moscow, she began her musical education at the age of only five, learning the violin under the instruction of Galina Turchaninova. She graduated with honours from the Central Music School of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where she was taught by Irina Bochkova. At the age of 19, she started singing lessons with Irina Dolzhenko, soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre, and studied singing at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music.

 

At a competition in Vienna in 2016, Alexandra’s voice was noticed by Dominique Meyer, who invited her to audition for the Vienna State Opera, following which she was engaged as an ensemble member in 2017. While in Vienna, she was taught by Kammersängerin Elena Filipova and began the bachelor’s program in solo singing at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (2017), followed by a master’s degree in song and oratorio (2020), both of which she completed with distinction.

 

In concert, she has performed with orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Prague Philharmonic and the Russian String Orchestra. Previous festival appearances include the Verbier Festival, Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg, the Menuhin Festival (Gstaad), and Gravity (Moscow).

 

She has worked with internationally renowned conductors such as Simone Young, Graeme Jenkins, Susanna Mälkki, Stanislav Kochanovsky and will in future appear under the baton of Vladimir Jurowski.

 

Alexandra has participated in masterclasses with Evgeny Nesterenko, Vesselina Kasarova, Thomas Quasthoff, Thomas Hampson, Barbara Frittoli, Anatoly Goussev, Silvana Bartoly and Stephan Rügamer.

 

In recent seasons Alexandra has appeared in significant premieres at the Vienna State Opera, such as The Gambler, Danton’s Tod, Die Weiden (world premiere) and in several productions for children. She is also a versatile actress with experience of working with acclaimed producers such as David McVicar, Josef Köpplinger, Karolina Gruber and François de Carpentries. Alexandra is set to appear in a future production directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov.

 

Ms. Yangel won the Grand Prix in the 1st Vienna International Music Competition in 2019. In 2018 she was invited to participate in the Concours Musical international de Montréal. Alexandra won the 2016 international singing competition at Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg.

 

She is currently based in Berlin.
