Ana Kaličanin, principal

Ana Kaličanin was born in 1990 in Belgrade, where, as one of the most successful students of her generation, she completed her elementary and masters academic studies at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade, in the class of Professor Ljubiša Jovanović. In March of 2018, with the highest mark, she received the title of Master of Arts at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna (Austria) in the class of Professor Walter Auer, the principal flute of the Vienna Philharmonic, and world renowned Professor Barbara Gisler Haase. She is currently a doctoral student at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade, in the class of Professor Ljubiša Jovanović and is also studying at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz (Austria) in the class of Professor Erwin Klambauer, the principal flute of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. She is also doing master studies in wind chamber music in the class of Professor Gottfried Pokorny at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

She has won numerous awards at prestigious international competitions in Serbia and abroad, including first prizes at the “Anton Eberst” (Serbia), “Ohrid Pearls” (Macedonia), “Young Virtuoso” (Bulgaria), as well as third prize at the Intermusic Wind Instrument Competition (Austria).

She is one of the few grantees of the Dr Robert and Lina Thyll-Dur Foundation (Lucerne, Switzerland) and Werner Tripp Memorial Fund (Vienna, Austria).

She has worked with world-renowned flutist such as Emmanuel Pahud, Kersten McCall, Felix Renggli, Andrea Lieberknecht, Peter-Lukas Graf, Michael Kofler, Michel Debost, and Philippe Bernold.

In her rich concert career, she has had the opportunity to perform and collaborate with orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, the Tonkunstler Orchestra Austria, the German Youth Philharmonic, the Webern Symphony Orchestra Vienna, the Webern Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, the Haydn Symphony Orchestra Vienna, and with conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Semyon Bychkov, and Gustavo Gimeno, performing at the largest concert venues in Vienna, such as the Muzikverein and the Concerthaus, as well as throughout Europe and the world. In 2014, she was an active participant at the Beijing Flute Festival.

In 2014, she auditioned successfully for the “Gustav Mahler” Youth Orchestra, and in 2018 for the Vienna Philharmonic’s “Angelika Prokopp” Summer Academy.

Since 2019, she has been employed as a teaching assistant to Prof. Ljubiša Jovanović at the wind instrument department at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade. Since 2018 Ana has been employed a the second flute with piccolo in the Belgrade Philharmonic, and since 2017 she has been a part-time associate of the RTS Symphony Orchestra as principal flute and permanent honorary associate of the Vienna Residence Orchestra (Austria), with which she performs more than 100 times in the course of the season.
