On Friday, April 3, at Kolarac Hall starting at 8 PM, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra performs a program dedicated to Maurice Ravel, featuring an unusual and striking concept devised by Gabriel Feltz. Instead of the orchestra, the concert opens with the sound of a solo piano, as pianist Anna Tsybuleva performs Gaspard de la nuit. The Belgrade Philharmonic will then showcase the same work under the baton of Sascha Goetzel, this time in an arrangement for full orchestra.
From a single performer on stage to an ensemble of eighty-five musicians, the interpretation of the same piece in both Ravel’s original version and the orchestral arrangement by Romanian composer M. Constant makes this concert especially distinctive and quintessentially Gabriel Feltz. A pianist himself, the late Chief Conductor placed particular emphasis on piano repertoire, and Gaspard de la nuit remains one of the most demanding works in the piano literature, known for its extreme technical challenges. An ideal interpreter of this piano suite, Anna Tsybuleva has been described by Gramophone magazine as the embodiment of refined pianism and intelligent musicality.
Tsybuleva rose to international prominence after winning First Prize at the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition. Today, she performs regularly in major concert halls worldwide, though her musical beginnings were far more modest. She grew up in a small mountain village in the Caucasus, surrounded by untouched natural beauty – a source of inspiration she continues to draw from. Her distinctive style draws listeners into an intimate, almost private musical space, even in the largest concert venues.
Anna Tsybuleva will also perform Ravel’s celebrated Piano Left Hand Concerto, composed for Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in World War I. The concert concludes with Medea’s Dance of Vengeance by Samuel Barber, conducted by the dynamic and charismatic Sascha Goetzel, Music Director of the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, Honorary Music Director of the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Sofia Philharmonic.
Tickets are available at the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra’s box office as well as online.
