On Friday, May 23, the legendary violinist Gidon Kremer returns to perform with the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra after more than half a century, Under the baton of conductor Hossein Pishkar, Kremer will take the stage of the Kolarac Hall at 8 PM. He will be joined by cellist Giedre Dirvanauskaite in a performance of Philip Glass’s Double Concerto, with works by Adams and Schumann also on the program.

Kremer first performed with the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra over 50 years ago, back in 1973. Today, he is considered one of the world’s leading violinists, with perhaps the most unconventional career among his peers. Over the past five decades, he has built and maintained a global reputation as one of the most original and compelling artists of his generation. He has performed in nearly every major concert hall around the world, both as a soloist and in collaboration with many of the greatest conductors and most renowned orchestras across Europe and North America.

Kremer’s repertoire is exceptionally broad and impressively diverse. He is now best known as a passionate advocate for contemporary music, especially works by minimalist masters. In this concert, he performs Glass’s Double Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Orchestra with his long-time collaborator cellist Giedre Dirvanauskaite, with whom he co-founded the renowned ensemble Kremerata Baltica.

The concert is conducted by Iranian maestro Hossein Pishkar, a rising star of the younger generation with an already impressive international career. The evening opens with John Adams’ fast-paced and virtuosic Short Ride in a Fast Machine, and concludes with the rich, expansive sound of Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, in a program fittingly titled Minimal – Maximal.
