Maestro Zubin Mehta, the world-famous pianist Lang Lang and the Belgrade Philharmonic held a concert that will be written in golden letters in the history of music on January 16 in Mumbai. In the magnificent and extremely emotional end of the celebration of the great maestro’s 90th birthday, the performance of one of the greatest pianists of our time together with the Philharmonic under Mehta’s baton, marked the triumphant closing of the significant jubilee celebration.
From the heart of Mumbai, the whole world gathered at the National Center for the Performing Arts to celebrate the great Mehta. A standing ovation greeted him at the very beginning of the concert, and the very first bars of Mozart’s overture from the opera “Don Giovanni” heralded a special concert experience.
The Belgrade Philharmonic was privileged to perform for the first time with superstar Lang Lang, and the combination of a global pianistic icon with an orchestra that brings fresh energy resulted in an interpretation that will be remembered for a long time. Lang Lang’s out-of-series performance of Beethoven’s Concerto No. 5 “Emperor” already brought the hall to its feet during the last bars, and the audience’s ovations did not let him leave the stage for a long time.
With his charisma, brilliant and incomparable interpretation, Lang Lang confirmed why he is considered an artist who pushes the boundaries of classical music. Delighted by the style, sound and energy of the Belgrade Philharmonic, before the joint performance, the famous pianist said:
“I am very excited to play with the Belgrade Philharmonic, I have been waiting for this opportunity for a very long time. Although we were very close once, in Cleveland when we had concerts back to back, we are finally together with Zubin Mehta, at a concert on the occasion of his 90th birthday.”
The Belgrade Philharmonic proved that it is worthy of the world’s biggest podiums in Mehta’s safe and precise hands during the performance of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, which the audience, often with tears in their eyes, breathlessly followed. In an explosion of applause, ovations and chants from the audience, the Philharmonic played a birthday song for their beloved Mehta at the end of this concert as well, which crowned a moving and extremely emotional event.
The celebration of Maestro Zubin Mehta’s 90 years was closed with a lot of love and in view of greatness, eternity and the triumph of art. Leaving an indelible mark on the audience’s memory, both concerts in Mumbai confirmed that Mehta’s artistry transcends eras and lasts forever.
