On its 102nd birthday, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra is heading to Dortmund, where it will join forces on Sunday, June 15 with the Dortmund Philharmonic for a Rachmaninoff Marathon. From dawn till dusk, at the Dortmund Konzerthaus, the two orchestras will perform all three symphonies and the first three piano concertos by Sergei Rachmaninoff.
Wrapping up its concert season with yet another impressive feat, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra reunites with its Dortmund colleagues. The idea to unite the two orchestras for an all-Rachmaninoff program came from their shared Chief Conductor, Gabriel Feltz, who previously led both ensembles in a Beethoven Marathon in Dortmund and Novi Sad back in 2022. Sadly, due to health reasons, Feltz was forced to withdraw from this latest undertaking. Stepping in to lead the orchestras are Mateusz Molęda and Moritz Gnann.
This monumental event, a world-class challenge, features three outstanding pianists, all recognized experts in Rachmaninoff’s music, who will perform with the two orchestras in three concerts over the course of a single day.
The marathon begins at 11:00 AM with the Dortmund Philharmonic conducted by Mateusz Molęda, joined by pianist Beatrice Berrut performing Piano Concerto No. 1, followed by Symphony No. 1. At 3:00 PM, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra takes the baton with Olga Scheps as soloist in Piano Concerto No. 2, alongside Symphony No. 2, conducted by Moritz Gnann.
The finale of the marathon, scheduled for 7:00 PM, brings both orchestras together for a joint performance of the iconic Piano Concerto No. 3 with Bernd Glemser, followed by Symphony No. 3, once again under the baton of Mateusz Molęda.
