{"id":20900,"date":"2018-12-20T21:24:07","date_gmt":"2018-12-20T20:24:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bgf.rs\/?p=20900"},"modified":"2018-12-20T21:30:02","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T20:30:02","slug":"shostakovich-s-eighth-symphony-after-a-half-century","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bgf.rs\/en\/shostakovich-s-eighth-symphony-after-a-half-century\/","title":{"rendered":"Shostakovich&#8217;s Eighth Symphony &#8211; After a Half Century"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Belgrade Philharmonic to perform symphony whose premiere was heardby 25 million people!<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After nearly a half century, the magnificent Eighth Symphony by\nDmitry Shostakovich will be on the program of the Belgrade Philharmonic, with\nconductor Daniel Raiskin, at Kolarac Hall, on Friday, December 21, at 8:00 p.m.\nFirst on the program will be Edward Elgar&#8217;s Concerto for Cello and Orchestra,\nperformed by brilliant next-generation Russian cellist Alexander Buzlov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of its &#8222;Freedom&#8220; series, the Belgrade\nPhilharmonic presents the views of two completely different composers on events\nfrom the 20th century, more precisely, the two world wars. Shostakovich&#8217;s\nSymphony No. 8, written in the third year of the Second World War, depicts the\npain and suffering of humanity during the bloodiest conflict in history. The\npremiere generated huge interest, in light of the famous Leningrad Symphony,\ncreated before the Eighth, whose success raised expectations of a new sensation\nby people all over the world. This is evidenced by the fact that the premiere of\nthe Eighth Symphony in the West, in New York City, in 1944, was broadcast live\non 134 radio stations in the United States and 99 more in South America. It was\nestimated that more than 25 million people listened to the symphony that night!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First on the program will be Elgar&#8217;s composition for cello,\ncreated when the author was deeply depressed due to all the suffering during\nthe First World War. He chose to give his voice to the cello, because of its\nrich tone, but also because of the cello&#8217;s exceptional character. That is why\nthe logical choice is soloist Alexander Buzlov, a cellist of true Russian\ntradition, who, critics say, <em>has an\noutstanding gift of making his instrument sing<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One hundred standing tickets will be on sale at the Kolarac Box\nOffice from 7 p.m. one hour before the concert.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Belgrade Philharmonic to perform symphony whose premiere was heardby 25 million people!
