G. Rossini:
William Tell, overture
E. W. Korngold:
Violin Concerto
F. Mendelssohn:
Symphony No. 4 (Italian)
In the 19th century, the idea of freedom was popular throughout Europe. The medieval Swiss hero, William Tell is the symbol of this struggle and the inspiration for the opera by Giacomo Rossini, written according to a play by Friedrich Schiller, whose most famous passage is an extensive overture.
In the domain of composing, Felix Mendelssohn was more inclined toward the ideas of Bach, Handel, Mozart and Beethoven, and as an artist he was also an outstanding performer of Beethoven’s music. Although he was a continuator of the great German tradition of composing, his best symphonic works were inspired by different European regions – Italy and Spain. On the concert program is Mendelssohn’s Symphony no. 4 called Italian.
