Second to last author whom we will view in relation to Beethoven within this concert series is Gustav Mahler. From his letters we learn that when he was composing his Fifth and Sixth Symphony in his summer house, Mahler only had the scores of Bach, Beethoven and Wagner, which speaks volumes about the influence of these authors on his work. And more obviously, the way Mahler used the trio motive in his Fifth Symphony, is the same as that of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. This masterpiece on our concert program is preceded by Ludwig van Beethoven’s Prometheus overture and Romances Nos. 1 and 2 for violin and orchestra.
